Frequently Asked Questions

Safety

There has been a 92% decrease in terrorism related incidents in Pakistan since 2013 and no known incidents against tourists in the last 7+ years. Tourism is the bread and butter for areas where are tours are scheduled so the local people are always respectful and hospitable towards visitors. On our supported treks when we do come across villages or settlements, we are greeted as guests and visitors. We do recognize the need for extra caution and always coordinate with local authorities.

Do I need a passport or visa to enter Pakistan?

Pakistan does have visa on arrival facility for a number of countries. Please check the details here: Visa on Arrival. If you have any questions or need assistance please feel free to reach us at info@thewander.travel

Can I use my credit cards/ATM cards in Pakistan?

All major international credit cards can be used in the major cities of Pakistan and are accepted at hotels, banks and some stores. If your credit card is encoded with a PIN number you will be able to withdraw cash from automatic teller machines (ATMs) situated at banks and shopping centers in most major cities. We recommend using an ATM in Pakistan to withdraw any cash you may require during the tour. Outside the bigger cities the ATMs are unreliable.

Pakistan Electricity and Communication

Pakistan's electricity supply runs at 230 volts, and we use angled two or three pin plugs type C and D (typically used in Europe). An adapter/converter is necessary, unless the item has a multi-voltage option.

Mobile Phones

Check with your phone company before leaving home about international mobile roam facilities available in Pakistan. Alternatively you can hire/buy mobile phones or SIM cards in Pakistan. We at The Wander can help arrange this for you. Note that signal is not available in all rural areas. If constant coverage is a necessity we can provide satellite phones.

Internet and WiFi access in Pakistan

Free WiFi hotspots are generally found in main cities only and can be sporadic throughout the rest of the country. Outside the cities and especially during the treks, cellphone reception is unavailable. Most of clients enjoy the disconnected nature of our tours, however, if staying connected is a priority we can arrange a satellite phone or you can use our satellite phone on a pay as you go basis.

Tipping and Service Charges

Tipping in Pakistan is not obligatory on any of our tips. However, tipping for good service or kindness is at the discretion of the visitor. We do recommend that you should budget $5/day for porters who carry your loads and and something at your discretion for the guide.

Alcohol in Pakistan

Pakistan is a dry country for all Muslims. However, foreigners and non-muslims are exempt from this restrictions. Hotels that cater to foreigners (the ones where you stay on our tours) do offer alcohol. The local beer is actually quite good.

Recommended Clothing

Dress is informal and relaxed on most occasions. This is a conservative country, so please do not plan on wearing shorts or skirts. Follow the recommended packing list we will provide for your trip.

Shopping

All of our tours include time for shopping. You will be amazed at the shopping options in Pakistan. Hand woven carpets, textiles, embroidered Pashmina shawls, unique jewelry and ethnic art. If you have something specific in mind, please let us know and we will make sure you get what you are looking for.
